Food from the Week

This week has been, as I like to say, a Good Food Week.  Lots of yummy, healthy stuff.  The back part of my brain has decided to lose a couple of kilograms as I have been overeating and under exercising during this whole sinusitis thing (which is still hanging around - it's insane), but I never take losing weight too seriously these days.  More just being conscious of the size of my night time meals and perhaps sticking to a small piece of chocolate instead of two, etc.  My body feels better eating lighter, anyway.

Seafood Risotto.
Was OK - I wanted a red one but I didn't have any canned tomatoes.
Then I didn't have any white wine for the above (except for a gorgeous 2004 Semillon which I wasn't about to open and pour into food).

Satay Tofu & Vegie Stir Fry

I did the satay with my natural peanut butter, cumin, curry powder, coriander, tumeric, a bit of chilli flakes... I think that was it.  Going through a tofu phase again.

Steak with Blue Cheese & Vodka Sauce

This was for M.... 'Man Meal' I call it.
See, unhealthy food doesn't even look as good as healthy food, right?
I will say, though, the sauce was yummy.
Must get something other than Grey Goose for cooking purposes.

Light Lunch
Rice cake with vegemite, salsa of celery and cucumber, roasted sweet potatoes, an egg and some bean sprouts.
This is my happy way of eating.  Love stuff like this.

Mummy's Lentil Soup
Mum used to always make this for me growing up, but with white potato instead of sweet potato.
Reminds me of my childhood and home.
Sometimes I wish I was still a kid, don't you?  Eating giant bowls of pasta without a thought to what it's doing to your waist line.

Spiced Citrus Cake & Gluten Free Lemon Shortbread
I usually never use recipes, except where baking is involved.
But I have started practicing not using them for baking my altering the recipes and seeing how they go.
The shortbread was made with rice flour and had the rind of 3 Meyer lemons added (from Mum & Dad's garden).
The citrus cake was a complete experiment - lemon, mandarine and orange rind in the cake, then I made a syrup from the juices of all 3 fruits and spiced it with some star anise and poured it over the top.
I sprinkled cinnamon and black pepper on top to serve.
It was a hit, yay!

Rose & Flat Bread
Can't be bothered putting the accent on the e.  Sorry.  Say, 'Rosay'.. thanks.
We had this with the lentil soup above.
Flat bread is so easy to make and I love to add spices and sesame seeds.
I need to get some interesting flours.

M's Fish Dinner
My boyfriend is crazy and when he decides to cook dinner, he always goes nuts.
Salmon, Tuna, Marlin, Prawns & Calamari was served.  They all tasted amazing, he did well.
The salmon & calamari rings were coated in breadcrumbs, parsley & garlic - so yummy.
This was the first time I had eaten a tuna steak and I am IN LOVE.  I understand why it's $45 or whatever a kg.  So good.
Marlin was tasty, but we've never had it before, so weren't sure if it was overcooked.  Is it usually a rather tough fish?  Apparently it has some of the highest levels of mercury...  M did it on a bed of onion, lemon peel, parsley, garlic, paprika and olive oil.  It tasted amazing.
Viogner on the side.

How was your food this week?

I was also inspired to create a chocolate drawer just like Heidi's.  Yummy.

My week has otherwise involved selling on Ebay, lots of job applications and a dose of retail therapy.  The sales right now are amazing.

Stay well,
Nat x

  1. Your food always looks so amazing and healthy!

I totally agree about feeling better when I eat lighter.... unfortunately this week, I'm feeling HEAVY. I hopped on the scales this morning and haven't actually gained any weight but I think I've been eating too much processed crap (chips, sausages etc) and am feeling bloaty and yuck. Need to seriously clean it up next week!

xxx PS That satay stir fry looks phenomenal!

  2. I haven't eaten tofu in ageees, might go through a phase with it soon though- I do that with most food. Oooh it would taste so nice with that satay, yum. At the moment I'm just using quinoa as a base for most of my meals. Oh the seafood looks amazing, I don't think I could ever give up fish :)

  3. new flatmate is a marine science student, he went on a tuna tagging trip yesterday though a seal got to one as they were reeling it in. Result: he brings home about a kilo of fresh fillets!

  5. Hi Nat,
I enjoy reading your blog, thanks for the ideas and inspiration! I'm also vegetarian and have food intolerances (and also have ME/CFS). I made a satay stir fry with tofu last week too, one of my fave foods! :) I just recently started getting a seasonal organic fruit and veg box, and I can't get over how super fresh and delicious the produce is! And it's making me try new things, like kale, and eat a wider variety of vegies.
Sorry to hear you've had a setback recently with the sinus infection, that sucks especially when you'd been doing so well. Hope you feel better soon. Good luck with your job applications!
